Payton was born in San Antonio and raised in Port Lavaca, Texas. She recently graduated from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi with her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, with a concentration in Ceramics.
Payton uses ceramics to create functional vessels that foster intimate connections with the user. Her artwork is meant to be held, used and engaged with, achieving a heightened sense of presence and interaction. In her latest series, her vessels are adorned with personal icons with traditional Texas imagery, confronting the user with the stereotypes and conflicted identity of the state she calls home. She sees ceramics as a way to connect a personal narrative to the greater social fabric and place art in the hands of the viewer.
